Meet Adam Harding, Business Development Associate

Adam has been a Business Development Associate with the Society for 6 months, providing frontline support to our broker network. As a proud Newportonian the Society’s heritage, as a Newport business with a strong foundation in mutuality, was important to Adam when he applied for the role. Find out what he’s said about working in financial services.

Adam, how have you found your first 6 months with the Society?

Working for the Society is like being part of a community and I like how dedicated everyone is to playing their part in reaching common goals and objectives. There’s an exciting atmosphere among colleagues, especially around the 5 year strategy and changes to our ways of working. It feels like we are a business that is modernising for the benefit of everyone who interacts with us, starting with our members, colleagues, customers and communities. I believe I’ve joined at the right time as I know there are so many opportunities for my personal and professional growth which I know will benefit everyone I work with.

Do you have any experience of working in financial services?

No, this is all completely new to me. I continue to face the daily challenge of absorbing fresh information and, in addition to this, I face the very exciting challenge of trying to put all this new knowledge into practice. I’ve been well supported and the ongoing training and development opportunities are helping me deliver a great experience for our brokers. I’m lucky to work with a team that is very close and supportive.

What attracted you to the role?

This is my second job in 18 months and my first one was a home based role which was challenging. I learned to be adaptable and resourceful. When I saw the vacancy with the Society, I knew I wanted to apply. I was ready to be in a flexible work environment with opportunities for agile working and career development. I was also attracted to the Society’s history as a business that started in Newport over 150 yrs ago with an ambition to help industrial workers get on the property ladder. That sense of mutuality, where someone’s savings can help another someone set the foundations of home, sits well with my personal values. I like the fact that we are owned by our members for the benefit of our members, not for shareholders.

What are your ambitions for the future?

To continue learning and developing myself. There are so many opportunities to grow at the Society from supporting the development of the broker experience to getting involved with our Branching into Communities programmes. I’ve enjoyed getting involves with initiatives such as volunteering in the community, supporting our charity partner Shelter Cymru and look forward to seeing our colleague driven Social Responsibility Panel grow.

I’d never considered I could have a career in Financial Services but I have found that if you apply yourself and work hard, anything is possible. Since I started at Monmouthshire I feel I have settled in very quickly and am looking forward to what lies ahead.
